GREAT HAMMERHEAD SHARK DIVING
Have you ever thought about going shark diving? Shark Diving can be one of the most thrilling experiences people have underwater and the Bahamas offers some of the greatest up close encounters with some of the larger shark species. Bimini offers one of the best opportunities in the world for great hammerhead shark diving. During the winter months, January – March, a healthy population of these elusive sharks congregate around the island’s waters. With numerous species of shark frequenting this area, you have opportunities to see Caribbean Reef Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Bull Sharks, and, of course, Great Hammerheads.
Besides great hammerhead shark diving, Bimini also offers a variety of other great diving, including several wrecks, and a great location to dive with stingrays.
WILD DOLPHIN EXPEDITION
Bimini is not just world renowned for its clear, calm water. It is known as one of the premier destinations in the world for finding and interacting with both Atlantic Spotted and Bottlenose Dolphin. Our trip includes this opportunity to swim with and photograph dolphins who seem to enjoy the interaction.
Atlantic Spotted Dolphin are usually found in groups of fewer than 50 individuals but have been occasionally seen in larger groups of around 200. They lead very complex social lives. They exhibit social behaviors like companionship, affection, aggression and playfulness. Because of their general appeal for humans, we offer a thrilling opportunity to experience the Spotted Dolphin up close as you swim alongside them. They are very responsive and eager to come close to meet you.
In the mid-1990s, a pod of wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins took up residence in the warm waters of Bimini, giving rise to one of the most enjoyable experience one can have when visiting Bimini – interacting in the water, in the wild, with these magnificent animals. No scuba, just snorkeling.
The dolphins are free spirits and swim to their own music, so to speak. They certainly don’t operate on a fixed performance schedule or show up on cue, and that makes it all the more magical when they do. These wild Spotted Dolphins come to play with us of their own free will. It is a natural encounter with wild dolphins that are in complete control of the interaction.
It is not uncommon for Bimini’s dolphins to come extremely close to you during your swim. However, for the health and safety of the dolphins, no touching, feeding or chasing is permitted. They generally prefer you to swim with your arms down at your sides or behind your back, not reaching out for them. And be forewarned, their eye contact is hypnotic!
WHERE IS BIMINI?
Bimini consists of two main islands—North Bimini Island and South Bimini Island—and numerous cays. The history of Bimini is as fascinating as the islands themselves. Just 50 miles off Florida's coast, they served as a convenient offshore speakeasy and liquor store during prohibition. Rumrunners used to store their stash on the nearby shores. And speaking of rum, Ernest Hemingway called Bimini his summer home. Jimmy Buffett spent time here while writing his book, and Martin Luther King, Jr. even composed parts of his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech while sailing with local boat builder, Ansil, who still lives on the islands today.
